Deep in Thought - Quote - Intrinsic Motivation

Perhaps no single phenomenon reflects the positive potential of human nature as much as intrinsic motivation, the inherent tendency to seek out novelty and challenges, to extend and exercise one’s capacities, to explore, and to learn. - Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci

Movember 2023

I’m usually not a Moustache fan, but this month I most certainly am because it’s Movember. When growing a moustache is a fantastic thing, no matter how it looks. The most important thing about Movember is it gets men of all ages thinking and talking about some important health topics, and hopefully this leads to action.  One of these important topics is Prostate Cancer. A sobering thought for all Aussie men is that your odds of getting prostate cancer is higher than dying playing Russian Roulette. Statistically, 1 in 5 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their life time. Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland and is commonly used as a biomarker for prostate health. Elevated PSA levels can be a cause for concern, as…

How To Improve Pain Management, Improved Mobility, Muscle Strength And Joint Support – Michael Battye (Osteopath Tyack Health)

In a world where stress and sedentary lifestyles have become the norm, the quest for good health is of the upmost importance. This is where Osteopathy can help! Osteopathy is renowned for its effectiveness in managing and alleviating pain. Whether it is chronic back pain, joint discomfort, or muscular tension, osteopathic treatments aim to identify and address the root cause of the pain. By manipulating and mobilizing the musculoskeletal system, osteopaths facilitate the body's natural healing mechanisms to assist in providing relief from pain. Techniques used may include forms of dry needling, massage, stretching, manipulations and mobilizations to assist. At the same time, we cannot always rely upon passive hands-on therapy. It is just as important to teach patients to take control over their own health and wellbeing. One of the strategies to do this looks…

Ikigai

What is your Ikigai? Chances are you do not know what that is unless you speak fluent Japanese.  We actually don’t have a specific word for it in English, which highlights to me, we may be missing something important!  According to some sources, people who practice ikigai live on average 10 years longer than people in the Western world.  Ten extra years is very significant, so what could it be? A super food, deep meditation, intermittent fasting…it is surprisingly none of these.   Ikigai is a Japanese word that describes a “reason for being”, or “a unique purpose in life”. The Japanese refer to it as your “reason to wake up in the morning.” In recent years, the pursuit of happiness, purpose, and well-being has gained significant attention worldwide. People are increasingly seeking…

How To Choose Between Counselling And Psychology

Counsellors help people tackle problems in a positive way by helping to clarify issues, explore options and develop strategies. ‘Counsellors are experts in listening and helping people achieve their personal goals,’ says Dr Tristan Snell, a counselling psychologist and senior lecturer in psychology at Deakin University. ‘They don't tend to do diagnosis or assessment, but they will support people with mild to moderate symptoms of mental illness.’ Counsellors adopt a more person-centred approach, says Dr Snell. ‘If you went to see a psychologist, they would probably do quite a comprehensive assessment to begin with, whereas a counsellor would begin by listening and discussing what your goals are,’ he says.Psychologists are trained in the science of how people think, feel, behave and learn. Many psychologists work in therapeutic settings, assessing people’s concerns…

Could Acupuncture Offer Relief For Some Long COVID Patients?

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), Long COVID is a multi-system illness characterised by ongoing persistent symptoms that can last for weeks or months following COVID-19 infection. Best estimates are that around 5-10% of Australians have or are experiencing symptoms persisting for more than 3 months. A significant proportion of people with long COVID report limitations on their daily activities and a reduced quality of life. Key risk factors include severe COVID 19 illness, comorbidities, Female gender and being in the mid-adult age group. Because Long COVID is so new there is little clinical evidence available around what works and what does not. There is some research underway in the U.K. involving acupuncture treatments over a six week period for Long COVID spearheaded by Dr Imogen…

A Stress Antidote Just For You

What a magical time of year! If you look back on your life could you ever have imagined you would be where you are right now? I expect for most of us, it probably seems almost surreal, the twists and turns life has taken to arrive at this present moment. Yet in many ways not completely surprising. Reflecting back on each decade it is hard to remember what we personally were most worried or stressed about each month, week or day. Collectively as a nation of people, we were stressed and worried about lots of things. Here is a quick recap of a few decades you might remember… For most Australians, the 1970s was a decade of great debate and social change. Old ways were overturned as women, peace activists, and First Nations peoples…

Who am I?

I am your constant companion.  I am your greatest helper or your heaviest burden.  I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.  I am completely at your command. Half the things you do, you might just as well turn over to me, and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.  I am easily managed; you must merely be form with me.  Show me exactly how you want something done, and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great men and, alas, of all failures as well.  Those who are great, I have made great.  Those who are failures, I have made failures. I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine.  Plus the…

Why We Need More Everyday Accidental Health Leaders?

My dad has been a keen cyclist his entire adult life. Many years ago, while I was still a teenager, he encouraged a guy he met in his 60’s to give cycling a go. He gave him guidance on buying a suitable road bike and they went on a few regular rides together. This gentleman lived where our family would go for regular holidays and almost without fail, whenever I was in that area on holidays, I would see my dad’s old friend out cycling. I thought back then, when he first started, he was pushing retirement age so wondered how much longer he would keep cycling? Well cycling obviously became a real passion for this gentleman and to my surprise decade after decade I would see him still out cycling…

Skin Cancer Apps, Friend or Foe?

Apps are becoming a way of life, just ask anyone who is currently dating! Although the developers of Skin cancer apps claim that they can identify problematic moles and lesions accurately, research has shown that this might not be the case.  A 2018 Cochrane review looked at two studies with 332 skin lesions, 86 of which were melanomas, after analysis by different apps, 55 melanomas were missed according to Medical News Today. That equates to 63% inaccuracy of actual melanomas. Some apps that sent images to a dermatologist who also missed some of the skin lesions or were unable to analyse them.  The thing that hurts us most in life, “Is what we know that is not so”. We download an App, scan a suspicious mole and the app says all okay so we forget…

Science Backs Doing These 11 Things Every Day Will Make You Happier ☺

1.Smile more. Smiling can make us feel better, but it's more effective when we back it up with positive thoughts, according to a new study led by a Michigan State University. Smiling makes us feel good, which also increases our attentional flexibility and our ability to think holistically.    2.Exercise for as little as just seven minutes a day. Exercise has such a profound effect on our happiness and well-being that it is an effective strategy for overcoming depression. Intense vigorous all body exercise for 7 minutes can provide nearly as much benefit as the recommended daily 1 hour of vigorous walking. One study found that exercise alone was long-term more effective than medication alone or a combination of medication and exercise for overcoming depression.     3.Sleep more.  It turns out sleep is also important…
