What is it?

Ingrown toenail surgery, also known as partial nail avulsion or wedge resection, involves removing the portion of the nail causing the problem to prevent recurrence and often includes destroying the nail-growing cells to prevent regrowth.

How does it work, to heal you?

Ingrown toenail surgery, often a partial nail avulsion (PNA), aims to permanently remove the nail portion causing the problem by destroying the nail-growing cells at the base of the nail with a chemical, preventing future ingrowth

Why are we different?

Ingrown toenail surgery approaches vary based on the severity and individual factors, with options ranging from partial nail removal to total nail removal or nail bed ablation, each with its own recovery time and potential complications

Ingrown Toenails

Are your experiencing Ingrown Toenails (oncyhocryptosis)? It happens when the sharp edge or corner of your toenail pierces the skin's top layer and penetrates the dermal tissue, causing inflammation in the affected area. This can lead to redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and bacterial infections. Don't worry, we can help treat your painful nail condition.

We offer effective treatments for infected ingrown toenails at Tyack Health. Our team can prescribe and perform the most suitable treatment for your condition, so you can get back to your normal activities without suffering from pain.

We provide two treatment options for ingrown toenails, including conservative treatments and surgical removal. Our podiatrists will assess the cause and severity of your condition and recommend the best approach that matches your needs and lifestyle.

Conservative Treatment

Our podiatrist provides conservative treatment for ingrown toenails. This involves carefully removing the nail spicule piercing the skin, and applying antiseptic to the affected area. If there is no infection present, our podiatrists will put packing underneath the ingrown nail edge to prevent it from piercing the skin again. Additionally, our podiatrists will discuss with you the ongoing management of your ingrown toenail, including cutting techniques, footwear modifications and proper foot hygiene.

Surgery

If you are experiencing recurring or chronic ingrown toenails, our podiatrists can evaluate your condition and perform surgery to address it. Depending on the severity of your ingrown toenail, we may perform a nail wedge resection or total nail avulsion.

Our surgery for ingrown toenails is conducted on-site in our treatment rooms under local anaesthesia. The nail or offending piece is removed and the nail matrix is chemically cauterized using Phenol, which prevents a portion of the nail from growing back permanently.

After the procedure, we apply a dressing and provide aftercare instructions. We recommend that you return for a post-operative review three days after your surgery. The healing time post-surgery averages 4-8 weeks, and in some cases longer.

What Causes Ingrown Toenails?

  • Some people naturally have irregularly curved toenails that make them more likely to develop ingrown toenails.
  • Shoes that are too narrow or have pointy toes can cause ingrown toenails by putting pressure on the toes and making the toenails grow into the skin. This can increase the chances of getting an ingrown toenail.
  • Cutting your toenails at an angle or too short can cause sharp edges that may lead to ingrown toenails if they get stuck under the skin. It's important to trim your toenails straight across and file sharp edges to avoid this issue.
  • If your toes are injured during activities like soccer or ballet, you may be susceptible to get an ingrown toenail.
  • Moist skin on your toes can cause ingrown toenails. This can happen if you don't clean your feet properly or sweat excessively. When your skin is moist, it's easier for your nails to grow into the skin and cause problems.

Get professional treatment for your ingrown toenail.

Ingrown toenails may not affect everyone, but they remain a very common issue—affecting 1 in 5 people who visit their family doctor for foot-related problems.

Ingrown toenails are not something you can get rid of overnight.  Some over-the-counter medicated creams may help to relieve the symptoms temporarily, but without proper attention to address the underlying cause of the problem, ingrown toenails will continue to recur in most cases.

If you're experiencing a new or recurring ingrown toenail, don't suffer in silence. Our skilled podiatrist can accurately diagnose and treat your condition, providing relief from discomfort and reducing pain. We offer both conservative and surgical ingrown toenail treatments that are effective. We understand how troublesome ingrown toenails can be. We'll take the time to understand your unique needs and lifestyle, so we can recommend the appropriate ingrown toenail treatment for you.
