Why should infants and children be adjusted?

Spinal problems can occur in utero, when foetal positioning is less than optimal, i.e. breech & transverse lie.  Natural birthing methods can also result in stress on the infant’s spine causing mechanical joint dysfunction, particularly in a long or difficult labour and through the use of interventions such as induction, forceps, ventouse (vacuum extraction) and/or caesarean section.

Spinal problems can also occur as a result of physical, emotional and chemical trauma /irritation.  Some examples of physical trauma include handling errors during bathing, parent-child play such as throwing the baby up and catching him or her under the arms and neck positioning during feeding.  Other types of examples of trauma include falls from tables, beds and chairs, which do not have the proper restraint capabilities.

Various emotional factors also play a role in causing mechanical joint dysfunction.

Environmental and food allergens are also common irritants, which can cause biomechanical joint dysfunction.  Cow’s milk protein allergy is one example.  This is where there is an immune response by the body to the protein in the cow’s milk.

Chiropractic Adjustment

The techniques used to adjust infants and children are so gentle that we are able to see babies from the first day of their life.  Each treatment and number of treatments is designed for the individual according to their presenting signs and symptoms.  Numerous research studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustment(s) for children.

The techniques we use are often quite different from those used to treat adults.

Key times to have your child checked is after birth, when they start to sit up on their own, start to crawl and take those first precious steps (key neurological developmental milestones).

Other key times to have your child checked include after any falls or injuries, after any recurrent cold and flu or infectious illnesses.
